City V Northampton Town: City back up their Good Friday win as Posh/Sunderland draw.

City backed up their 2-1 win away at Crewe Alexandra on Good Friday, with a comfortable 2-0 victory at home to Northampton Town.

Grant McCann made one change to the City starting XI from their 2-1 victory away to Crewe Alexandra, Josh Magennis returned to the set up with Tom Eaves dropping to the bench.


The opening moments of the game saw city impose some physicality on todays visitors. Though, Lewie Coyle had prying eyes concerned as he gingerly walked after battling with his Northampton opponent, All was well as Coyle soon reentered play shortly after. The early endeavours of the game was all City, applying ample pressure on Northampton in the opening ten minutes.


City had an early shout for a penalty, Keane Lewis-Potter surged forward with an excellent run when he found himself brought down within the box, all penalty appeals were waved away.


City soon had the ball in the back of the net in the sixteenth minute, when Josh Magennis thought he had bagged his thirteenth goal of the season after a fumble in the box, only for his effort be flagged offside.


City could have opened the scoring just past the twenty minute mark, a delightful cross from Callum Elder on the left across the face of goal, yet no-one was able to make contact.


City opened the scoring in the twenty nineth minute when Callum Elder fired home from twenty yards out, straight into top left corner. A strike worthy of winning any game. Thunderbastard alert.

City continued the good build up play, continually pressing and probing, offering the Northampton little respite in their defensive duties. City almost doubled their lead in the fourty second minute, Josh Magennis floated in a sumptuous cross from the right, finding Keane Lewis-Potter in the middle, who's header was met by a fine Jonathan Mitchell save.


City however, made good on doubling their lead moment's later when Josh Magennis was released clear on goal down the left, only to unselfishly square the ball to Keane Lewis-Potter whom found the back of the net, for his tenth goal of the season. Lewis-Potter becomes only the third City player aged 20 or younger to reach double figures for the season, only Chris Chilton and Fraizer Campbell have accomplished said feat, previously.

City entered Half-Time firmly in control of the game.

The opening moments of the second half were scrappy as Northampton tempers began to fray, as their senior member, Alan Sheehan was booked after an altercation with George Honeyman. City continued their good approach play, as seen in the first half, collecting a few half efforts ans corners along the way.


City could have made it three in the fifty third minute, when Lewie Coyle floated in an inviting cross to the far post, finding Josh Magennis whom was only able to head wide ib what would have been his thirteenth of the season.


Greg Docherty nearly made it three nil himself, on the hour mark. After firing a bullet of an effort from twenty five yards out, clipping the bar on it's way over the bar. City continued to bombarded the Northampton defence after an albeit brief period of lethargic play.


City should have gone three nil up in the seventy second minute, as a honeyman free-kick met an unmarked KLP whom fired wide. KLP had another opportunity two minutes later, firing wide after Callum Elder cut the ball back from the left-hand side.


Grant McCann then made a triple change, Mallik Wilks, Magennis and KLP made way for Tom Eaves, Gavin Whyte and Dan Crowley. Enables City to freshen things up amidst some quick fire games.


City had another penalty shout in the eighty second minute, Greg Docherty with a driving run who then fed Lewie Coyle whom was caught within the box, only for the referee to wave away any penalty appeals, instead giving a City corner instead.


Grant McCann made a fourth substitution in the eighty eigth minute, bringing off George Honeyman as a precaution after going down in the centre circle, Jordan Flores entered play. Moments later, Substitution number five was made after Jacob Greaves also went down, more precautionary work bringing Sean Mcloughlin on in his stead.


City finally scored their third goal deep into added time, Gavin Whyte was slipped in on goal from a sumptuous pass, who then rounded Jonathan Mitchell to slot the ball home for three nil.

City now find themselves five points clear of third placed Sunderland and three ahead of second placed Peterborough United whom managed a one all draw after playing each other today. Sunderland do still have the two game advantage and Peterborough a one game, though todays results make for a better situation for City.
