Accrington Stanley V City: Setback for City on the road.

Updated: Mar 14, 2021

Hull City suffered a setback in their promotion push as they lost 2-0 at Accrington Stanley.

The first half was a very scrappy affair as both sides looked to impose themselves on the game. City possessed an early threat in the 2nd minute as Keane Lewis-Potter looked to get on the end of a free kick but it was cleared well by Accrington goalkeeper Nathan Baxter.

Jacob Greaves made an important block in the 4th minute as he prevented Colby Bishop's shot from heading towards the City goal. The Tigers nearly created a goalscoring opportunity a few minutes later when George Honeyman's ball to Mallik Wilks was intercepted by Nathan Baxter.

Accrington had the first real attempt on target which came in the 11th minute as Tariq Uwakwe's effort was well saved by City goalkeeper George Long.

Meanwhile, Mallik Wilks was denied in the 19th minute as he saw his effort blocked by Michael Nottingham. City created an opportunity in the 26th minute when skipper Richie Smallwood fired his effort over the bar.

George Long was forced into making another good save in the 29th minute as he prevented Matt Butcher's strike from going into the back of the net. The Tigers thought they'd taken the lead in the 34th minute as Josh Magennis headed home from a Callum Elder cross but it was ruled out for offside.

Accrington took the lead in the 50th minute when Tariq Uwakwe played Dion Charles through and he hit an effort which beat George Long at his near post.

City nearly equalised in the 58th minute as Keane Lewis-Potter had his shot saved by Nathan Baxter.

The Tigers had another big chance five minutes later which fell to Mallik Wilks but he was unable to put it on target.

Accrington doubled their lead in the 68th minute thanks to Matt Butcher's long range effort.

City subsequently had to take George Honeyman off after he picked up an injury which added to their woes.

The hosts came close again to getting a third goal when Sean McConville's deflected effort came back off the crossbar.

Callum Elder had a late effort in the 86th minute which he put over the bar.

The Tigers have dropped into 2nd place in the League One table and are three points behind league leaders Lincoln City after they won at Portsmouth.

City are also two points clear of 3rd placed Peterborough United as they played out a goalless draw against Bristol Rovers.
