There were two changes made to City’s starting 11 as Tom Eaves and Regan Slater replaced Gavin Whyte and Reece Burke. Meanwhile, there were places on the bench for Sean McLoughlin, Callum Jones and Ahmed Salam.
Gillingham made a bright start to the game as they threatened inside the 1st minute as John Akinde’s half volley drifted just wide. City then had an effort in the 4th minute through Tom Eaves who put his shot wide.
The visitors came very close to taking the lead a minute later when Kyle Dempsey fired an effort which came off his teammate Vadaine Oliver and hit the post.
City took the lead in the 9th minute as former Gillingham man Tom Eaves met a Mallik Wilks cross and headed home at the back post to secure his 4th league goal of the season. The Tigers then looked to double their lead a few minutes later as Mallik Wilks had an effort blocked by Gillingham defender Connor Ogilvie.

The Tigers almost doubled their lead in the 19th minute when some great attacking play from George Honeyman set up Tom Eaves who hit a shot which came off the outside of the post.
Gillingham worked their way back into the game and they launched a number of crosses and long throw ins into the City box. These included a Thomas O’Connor free kick in the 38th minute which was punched away by City goalkeeper Matt Ingram.
City had a chance in the 44th minute when George Honeyman passed the ball along to Greg Docherty who subsequently fired an effort over the bar. The Tigers had plenty of defending to do in the first few minutes of the second half as Gillingham put balls into the City box.
City had a glorious chance to make it 2-0 in the 59th minute as George Honeyman’s corner was flicked on by Keane Lewis-Potter into the path of Jacob Greaves who headed the ball against the crossbar.
Gillingham equalised in the 67th minute as Olly Lee met a back post header from Jack Tucker and smashed the ball into the back of the net.
The Tigers nearly restored their lead in the 75th minute when a Mallik Wilks cross deflected off Connor Oglivie and hit the side netting. A couple of minutes later, Tom Eaves got on the end of a George Honeyman cross and headed the ball straight at Gillingham goalkeeper Jack Bonham.
City carved out another opportunity in the 84th minute as Keane Lewis-Potter latched onto George Honeyman’s pass and put an effort wide.
There was a stoppage in play late on as Alfie Jones received lengthy treatment after he was caught in the face by Jack Bonham as he came out of his goal to deal with a free kick. The ex Gillingham loanee wasn’t able to carry on and he was replaced by Sean McLoughlin.
Gillingham almost won it with the last kick of the game as the ball bounced off Dominic Samuel and came back off the post.
This draw leaves City one point clear of 2nd placed Peterborough United after they beat Accrington Stanley 7-0. The Tigers are also three points clear of 3rd placed Sunderland who won 0-1 at Bristol Rovers.
