City V Swindon Town: City get the job done.

Updated: Mar 14, 2021

Hull City secured an important win as they beat Swindon Town 1-0 at the KCOM Stadium.

Grant McCann made two changes for this game as Reece Burke and Dan Crowley came into the starting 11 whilst Richie Smallwood and Josh Magennis dropped to the bench.

City were the much better side in the first half and should have gone into half time with a much bigger lead than they did.

City made an outstanding start to the game as they took the lead in the 5th minute courtesy of Greg Docherty's 3rd league goal of the season.

Docherty smashed the ball home from a George Honeyman cut back after he was played through by an excellent Dan Crowley through ball.

The Tigers soon had a couple of big chances to double their lead. The first of these came in the 14th minute when Keane Lewis-Potter latched onto a Callum Elder long pass and saw his effort saved by Swindon goalkeeper Mark Travers. City threatened again in the 15th minute from the resulting corner as Mallik Wilks had his shot saved by Mark Travers after a scramble in the Swindon box.

City continued to exhibit attacking play in the 28th minute as a good Greg Docherty pass found Callum Elder who then looked to pick out Keane Lewis-Potter but this was dealt with by the Swindon defence. The Tigers had a half chance a few minutes later through a header from Jacob Greaves which was off target as he met a Callum Elder corner.

Dan Crowley was the latest City player to have an opportunity when he put his shot over the bar in the 33rd minute.

Meanwhile, Jacob Greaves made a brilliant block in the 36th minute as he prevented Hallam Hope's cross from finding Tyler Smith inside the City box. Swindon had a half chance just before half time when Scott Twine's effort went over the bar after Matty Palmer played a free kick along to him.

City almost doubled their lead in the 55th minute as some intricate play between Keane Lewis-Potter and Greg Docherty resulted in Docherty having an effort saved by Mark Travers. Swindon posed a threat in the 59th minute as Scott Twine put a free kick over the bar.

The Tigers nearly got a decisive second goal in the 77th minute as some great play from Keane Lewis-Potter and George Honeyman resulted in the latter attempting to find Mallik Wilks at the far post but it eventually came to nothing.

City failed to take another opportunity five minutes later when Greg Docherty's shot went just over the bar. The visitors almost equalised in the 86th minute as Jack Payne had an effort which went straight at City goalkeeper George Long and the ball was eventually cleared away from danger.

City have returned to the top of the League One table after this win which was coupled with Lincoln City losing against Doncaster Rovers.
