Oxford started the better of the two sides and took the lead in the 10th minute as James Henry fired the ball into the back of the net. The hosts had a chance to double their lead in the 27th minute when Matty Taylor headed wide.

City began to work themselves into the game towards the end of the first half.

Mallik Wilks had an effort in the 39th minute which was saved by Oxford goalkeeper Jack Stevens and then put another shot wide just before half time.

Grant McCann made a substitution at half time as Keane Lewis-Potter came on to replace Hakeeb Adelakun. However, it was Oxford who posed an attacking threat in the early stages of the second half as they forced the City defence into making important blocks and clearances to prevent them from doubling their lead.

Lewis-Potter nearly made a big impact in the 56th minute as his free kick was tipped over the bar by Jack Stevens. City had another big chance to equalise in the 58th minute when Alfie Jones met a corner delivered into the Oxford box and saw his header come back off the crossbar.

The Tigers got themselves back on level terms in the 68th minute as Greg Docherty bagged his first goal for the club with a fantastic volley from the edge of the box. City pushed for a winner for the remainder of the game and came close to getting it deep into added time when Keane Lewis-Potter put a header over the bar from a Josh Emmanuel cross.

The Tigers are now two points clear of 2nd placed Lincoln City after they won 2-0 at Rochdale. City also have a healthy five point gap between themselves and 3rd placed Ipswich Town.
