Portsmouth V City: A major statement of intent.

Hull City made a real statement as they won 4-0 against promotion rivals Portsmouth.

City almost made the perfect start to the game inside the first few minutes as Gavin Whyte's attempted through ball to Keane Lewis-Potter was well cut out by the Portsmouth defence. The Tigers had a penalty appeal turned down by the referee in the 15th minute when Gavin Whyte went down inside the Portsmouth box.


Portsmouth thought they had taken the lead in the 16th minute as John Marquis slotted home but it didn't count because of a foul in the build up. Pompey had their first real opportunity of the game in the 18th minute courtesy of a Marcus Harness free kick which went harmlessly over the bar.


City took the lead in the 23rd minute through an own goal from Jack Whatmough as the ball bounced off him into the back of the net after Pompey goalkeeper Craig MacGillivray had saved Keane Lewis-Potter's header.

Portsmouth produced a response after their setback and had a half chance in the 26th minute through a deflected effort from John Marquis. They created another opportunity ten minutes later when Marcus Harness put a header wide.


Pompey threatened the City goal again in the 41st minute as Ryan Williams saw his shot go over the bar. City came close to doubling their lead just before half time when Keane Lewis-Potter cut in off the left wing and was prevented from scoring.


The Tigers showed plenty of attacking intent at the beginning of the second half as Keane Lewis-Potter had an effort in the 49th minute which was comfortably saved by Craig MacGillivray. Lewis-Potter had another chance a minute later which he put wide. Lewis-Potter came close yet again when saw his free kick go wide in the 53rd minute.


The Tigers doubled their lead in the 61st minute as George Honeyman was on hand to fire home a rebound and get his 3rd league goal of the season after Mallik Wilks had his effort saved by Craig MacGillivray.

City extended their lead in the 64th minute thanks to a second Jack Whatmough own goal as he inadvertently put the ball in the back of the net from Lewie Coyle's pull back after Greg Docherty found him on the right wing with a good pass.

Portsmouth almost pulled a goal back in the 71st minute when substitute Ellis Harrison had his effort well saved by City goalkeeper George Long.Pompey had an effort in the 84th minute when Harvey White's free kick went over the bar.


The Tigers got their fourth goal late on as substitute Josh Magennis produced a fine finish to bag his 8th league goal of the season.


City remain top of the League One table and they're level on points with 2nd placed Lincoln City after they beat Northampton Town. The Tigers are also three points clear of 3rd placed Peterborough United.
